The Occult

In the Western world, “occult” usually evokes evil connotations associated with witchcraft and sorcery, summoning the dead, and ritual sacrifice. In some Eastern cultures, however, religion and occultism are frequently blended into a morally neutral form. Western occult beliefs pertain to “secret philosophies” such as “Hellenistic magic and alchemy” combined with “Jewish mysticism.”

Occult practitioners are supposedly gifted with powers and knowledge available to specially chosen individuals or people of great intellect. Occultists or spiritualists, as they are sometimes known, seek “secret wisdom” such as the key to eternal life. The word “occult” means “hidden.”

Occultism might entertain, but even if one does not experience demonic possession, there is a subtle danger that the Christian dabbling in occultism “just for fun” will stray from God’s peace.

Contact with the occult is a major open door to the demonic and is strictly forbidden in Scripture (see Deuteronomy 18:9-12). There are two sources of supernatural power in the world: God and Satan. The word occult means “secret or hidden” and refers to the supernatural realm of Satan.

Dabbling in and Exploring Occult Practices Will Open Demonic Doors to Satanic Attack, Oppression and Possibly Possession

Dangers of the Occult

With the advance of what is called the New Age Movement, there are many Christians who are getting pulled into the dangerous, demonic dark kingdom.

Many Christians have not read the Bible in its complete entirety and they are thus not aware of the strict warnings that God the Father has given about being involved in any type of occult activity. Most of these warnings are back in the Old Testament. One of the greatest stories in the Bible is the story of Moses and how he pulled God’s chosen people out of slavery from Egypt – and then the subsequent story of Joshua and Caleb who were then called by God to lead His people from the wilderness into the Promised Land. Before they went into the Promised Land, they were given strict warnings and guidelines by God the Father as to what they could do and what they could not do. And one of those warnings was about not engaging in a lot of the pagan practices of the people who were already inhabiting parts of the Promised Land.

Many of these people were evil and had horrible practices of sacrificing their own children to appease what they thought were gods. Some of these people were involved in heavy occult type activity, and God was very strict in the warnings that He gave His own people in that they were not to engage in this type of evil activity.

The warnings that God gave His people back then still apply to all of us in this day and age. The Bible says that God does not change, and this includes all of His ways and all of His warnings. The trouble is that most Christians are not aware of what some of these warnings are because they have not spent much time reading and studying from the Old Testament.

The Bible says that it is the job of the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and teach us all things in this life. God wants to be the Guide and Teacher of your life. He does not want you going to others to seek out this type of divine guidance because of His intensely jealous nature. The Bible says that there is only one God – and only He knows all things about you – which includes all of your past, present, and future. The first two commandments are that we are to have no other gods or idols before God the Father.

The minute you go to a fortuneteller or psychic for any type of divine guidance, you are placing this person before God the Father and you will thus risk incurring His wrath, along with possibly opening the door for demons to be able to come directly after you. These fortunetellers get their ability to have partial knowledge about you and your present situation directly from demons. No human has the supernatural ability to know what is going to happen to you in the future, or anything about you in your present condition if they have never met you before.

And if they do seem to have some type of personal information about you that could only be supernaturally picked up, then that knowledge is being transmitted to them by demons, not deceased loved one's or friends. Once you step into the fortuneteller’s office, you are stepping behind enemy lines since these people are operating under the direct influence of demonic spirits.

At this point, if God should so allow it, you have now given the demons the full legal right to be able to follow you home. And from there, the demons will set up shop in your house and in your life - they will then start to attack you and possibly the other members of your family.

The Bible says that God’s people will perish for having lack of knowledge – and many Christians are dragging demonic spirits home with them due to their lack of knowledge about how dangerous it is to engage in any type of occult activity.

When our loved one's pass on, they do not visit your or speak through mediums, psychics or a Ouija Board - these are called 'familiar spirits, because demons are disguising themselves (who know you and your family very well) to influence and deceive you, possibly even harm you.

The enemy and his minions are liars...do not allow them to deceive you!

Occult Practices that Lead to Demonic Influence

The Bible categorizes divination, witchcraft, magic, and spiritism as works of the flesh, aligning them with idolatry and rebellion against God. These practices represent humanity's attempt to access hidden knowledge, manipulate spiritual forces, or control outcomes through forbidden means. The Bible warns against these practices, portraying them as antithetical to faith in the one true God.

Astral Projection

Astral projection, also known as astral travel, involves the belief that a person's consciousness or "astral body" can leave the physical body and explore different realms or dimensions. This phenomenon is often described as a form of out-of-body experience (OBE), where individuals report feeling as though they are floating above their physical form and can observe their surroundings from a different perspective.

Astrology and Horoscopes

The dangers of astrology and horoscopes in Christianity lie in their potential to divert believers from true faith in God and to represent a spiritual danger. Astrology, as a practice of divination, is condemned in the Bible (Deuteronomy 18:10-14) and is considered an abomination to the Lord. Horoscopes, which are based on astrology, are also viewed as incompatible with faith and can harm a Christian's relationship with God. The Bible encourages believers to trust in God's Providence and not seek answers in the stars or baseless rituals, which only lead to demonic influence for those seeking answers in the stars/cosmos.

Mediums & Psychics

Mediums, spiritists, channelers, fortune-tellers, and psychics abound in our times. They can be reached through every form of media. Many people are tempted to turn to mediums in times of loss and grief (out of a strong desire to hear from a loved one), in times of transition or confusion (to help make life decisions), or out of loneliness and desperation when life has just become too much of a challenge and people are not reaching their goals.

Satan is a liar and deceiver from Jesus’ own words. “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies” John 8:44 NIV.

Second, we know that part of his trickery is to come to people in a beautiful form as we’re warned by Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” Mediums and channelers are often adept at looking like the light in times of darkness.

Third, both Jesus and Paul warn us that this deception will intensify the closer we come to Jesus’ return. “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” Matthew 24:24 NIV, and “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons” 1 Timothy 4:1 NIV. Mediums have always existed but our access to them now is as easy as a click of the mouse.

In Deuteronomy 18:10-12 NIV, God is explicitly clear about forbidding specific occultic practices. “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.” These practices are precisely why God will command Israel to destroy the Canaanites and drive them from the land that will become Israel. This is how dangerous the practices are—the destruction of nations was necessary to eliminate them.

Tarot Cards

Tarot cards, often hailed as mystical tools that provide insight into the future, have captivated individuals for centuries. However, behind the enticing allure lies a dangerous game that can lead to misguided beliefs, dependency, and even harm. While some may dismiss tarot cards as harmless fun or a form of entertainment, the potential psychological and emotional repercussions can be devastating. Christianity warns against divination and the use of tarot cards due to their association with the occult and potential demonic influence - they open people to demonic deception and manipulation.

'Natural' or White Magic

White magic is described as “good” magic, as opposed to black magic, which draws upon the powers of evil beings. Opinions vary as to the differences between black and white magic, ranging from the idea that they are two names for exactly the same thing, to the belief that they are completely different, especially in goals and intent. The Bible does not differentiate between “good” and “bad” magic. Magic is magic as far as the Bible is concerned. Scripture doesn’t distinguish whether the magic is supposed to be used for good or for bad; it’s all forbidden because it appeals to a source of power other than God.

Those who practice white magic, also often called Wicca, worship the creation rather than the Creator, and, while they may not call on the devil or evil spirits, they often appeal to “mother earth,” angels, and/or the elements. The central Wiccan theme is, “if it does no harm, do your own will.” Many who dabble in white magic call themselves Wiccans, whether they actually are or not. Although Wicca is fairly open-ended and there are various “denominations” and theological positions within the belief, there are certain beliefs, practices, and traditions that connect adherents of white magic to Wicca.

Whether the intent is to venerate “mother earth,” the elements, or the angels - even if one intends to do only good, the reality is that, ultimately, there is no distinction between white and black magic,  because they both worship something other than God.

It’s frightening to think that the adherents of white magic are unknowingly praying to and beseeching the same god that adherents of black magic are — Satan.

Numerology

Numerology (known before the 20th century as arithmancy) is the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value, via an alphanumeric system, of the letters in words and names. When numerology is applied to a person's name, it is a form of onomancy. It is often associated with astrology and other divinatory arts.

Reiki

It was developed in Japan in the late nineteenth century by Mikao Usui and brought to the West in 1937. Reiki is administered through the hands of a trained Reiki practitioner, with the client lying fully clothed on a massage table. A session usually lasts 45 to 90 minutes. The Reiki practitioner places his or her hands at locations around the head, shoulders, abdomen, legs, and feet, lightly touching or slightly away from the body. A Reiki practitioner uses a Reiki symbol, “the Rei or God-Consciousness responds by changing the way the Reiki energy functions. To “activate” a Reiki symbol, the practitioner draws the symbol in the air, or says its name, or simply visualizes it. The claim is that these symbols can increase the healing power of Reiki, clear a room of negative energy, protect oneself (or loved ones or one’s car, home or other valuables), eliminate unwanted habits, facilitate exorcism or spirit release work, send Reiki to others at a distance (even to the other side of the world), or send Reiki energy into the future or past. Reiki work transfers negative spiritual entities onto the client, opens up the one doing the work to demonic, negative spiritual influences and puts a curse on the client in the form of the reiki symbols being used.

Yoga

Yoga, a widely embraced exercise and relaxation practice, may appear harmless. Nevertheless, Christians must address its noteworthy spiritual risks. This article explores yoga’s origins, potential dangers for Christians, and how it contrasts with methods of Christian prayer and meditation.

Yoga originated in ancient India and is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy and spirituality. “Yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” which means to yoke or unite. In its original context, yoga is a spiritual discipline that aims to achieve unity with the divine or higher consciousness. The various practices of yoga, including physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana), are designed to prepare the body and mind for spiritual awakening and enlightenment.

The practice of yoga is deeply rooted in the spiritual principles of Hinduism, which include concepts such as karma (the law of cause and effect), dharma (one’s duty and righteousness), and moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth). These principles guide practitioners toward self-realization, inner peace, and a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all living beings. Although yoga is commonly promoted in the West as a secular practice centered on health and well-being, its origins and ultimate objectives are spiritual and religious.

Practicing yoga poses several hazards, including opening oneself up to unseen spiritual forces in the demonic realm, diverting focus away from God. Yoga poses are quite literally opening yourself up to demonic gods.

False Religions

False religions often set traps through deceptive practices and teachings that mislead individuals into believing they are on the right path with God. These traps can manifest in various forms, including false teachings, temptations, and worldly distractions. The Bible warns believers to be vigilant against spiritual deception, as seen in Matthew 7:15, where Jesus cautions, "Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves." This metaphor highlights the subtlety with which false teachings can infiltrate the church, appearing harmless or beneficial while leading believers astray. The Apostle Paul also underscores the deceptive nature of spiritual traps, which can appear righteous or truthful but are ultimately rooted in falsehood. Discernment is a critical tool for believers in identifying and avoiding spiritual traps.

False Religions

Examples of false religions include: The Church of Satan (satanism), The Church of Scientology, The Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormonism), Buhdhism, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Learn more here.

Witchcraft

Witchcraft is generally defined as the use of supernatural powers or magic, often associated with causing harm or misfortune to others. Practitioners, known as witches, may engage in various rituals and spells. The term can also refer to a spiritual practice that involves working with energy and intention to manifest change or connect with the universe and to influence to for specific benefit or to influence others for their benefit/intentions.

Necromancy

Necromancy is the practice of magic involving communication with the dead, often for the purpose of divination or gaining hidden knowledge. It typically involves summoning the spirits of the deceased as apparitions or visions to foretell future events. Historically, necromancy was practiced in various ancient cultures, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Unlike popular portrayals, necromancy is not solely about raising the dead; it also emphasizes respect and learning from those who have passed.

Wicca

Wicca is a modern, Earth-centered religion with roots in the ancient practices of our shamanic ancestors. Its practitioners, who call themselves Wiccans, believe in the life-giving and life-sustaining powers of Nature through ritual worship and engaging in spell work. Wicca is technically classified as one of many Pagan religions. As 'earthy' and natural as this sounds, make no mistake - this is a subtle open door the enemy uses to distract you from the one true God and Creator of this world.

Satanism

Satanism refers to a group of religious, ideological, or philosophical beliefs based on Satan—particularly his worship or veneration. Because of the ties to the historical Abrahamic religious figure, Satanism—as well as other religious, ideological, or philosophical beliefs that align with Satanism—is considered a countercultural Abrahamic religion.

Satan is associated with the Devil in Christianity, a fallen angel regarded as chief of the demons who tempt humans into sin. Satan is also associated with the Devil in Islam, a jinn who has rebelled against God, the leader of the devils (shayāṭīn), made of fire who was cast out of Heaven because he refused to bow before the newly created Adam and incites humans to sin.

In Heaven, satan was one of God's most beautiful angels. He disguises himself as an angel of light. His hate for us is due to the fact we are created in God's image.

2 Corinthians 11:14 states: “…for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” The term “masquerades” conveys the deceptive nature of evil taking on a guise that appears righteous, beneficial, or spiritually enlightening. Some translations use “transforms himself,” underscoring the intentional strategy of adopting an outward form that belies the true inward corruption of the devil. This is not a contradiction of other biblical portrayals of Satan as cruel (1 Peter 5:8), murderous (John 8:44), and the embodiment of evil (Ephesians 6:12); rather, it highlights a consistent motif: evil can wear many faces.

Crystal Healing

Healing crystals, as they are called, are considered by many as helpful in curing or providing healing to various conditions. They aren't backed by scientific data, and more importantly, they are not backed by Scripture. God's word actually opposes them. A quick search on the internet will tell us that the use of healing crystals, or gems and stones believed to have "healing powers," are closely associated with mystic practices. In fact, it is heavily associated with the New Age spiritual movement. Users choose crystals according to an attraction called a "psychic affinity," and each crystal is chosen because of its believed "inherent power." Some are believed to have "grounding powers" while some "enable contacts with spirit guides and angels."

Using crystals for healing powers or protection will open yourself up to demonic influence.

Reincarnation

Reincarnation is the rebirth of a soul into a new body, often with the person carrying little or no memories of past lives. Certain religions believe that good deeds in a past life can lead you to have a better standing or social position in the next life (or bad deeds can lead to lower positions).

Often to break the cycle of reincarnation, a person must reach some sort of Enlightenment or must pass through enough lives at a high enough position to make it into a Nirvana or eternal bliss.

Religions who believe in the concept of reincarnation include Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Kabbalah Judaism.

Humans die once, not multiple times in an effort to achieve a version of our 'higher selves.' And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27). He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return (Psalm 78:39).

Reincarnation can seem like an appealing notion to many people. After all, when loved ones pass, people may hope they’ve been reborn in another body moments later and that they will find ways to reunite on earth throughout all time. This concept can also seem all the more convincing when people recall moments from “past lives.”

Nevertheless, reincarnation runs contrary to the Word of God. After all, why in the world would Jesus Christ die on the cross and resurrect for our sins, if He doomed us to repeat lives here on earth?

Ouija Board and Seances

Many advertisements and endorsements will try to pass off Ouija boards as being a harmless children’s game, but it is not. Ouija boards are directly related to the occult and Christians need to abstain from participating in the use of Ouija boards.

Ouija boards first came onto the scene in February of 1891. When it first came out, it was marketed as a magical board that could answer questions about a person as well as answer questions about the future. With a starting price of $1.50 in 1891, this “magical” board started selling out. In the modern-day, Ouija boards are still being produced and sold, even at children's toy stores.

Ouija boards are used for séances, communicating with the dead, and predicting the future. Many advertisements and endorsements will try to pass off Ouija boards as being a harmless children’s game, but it is not. Ouija boards are directly related to the occult and Christians need to abstain from participating in the use of them.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns us, “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.”

Stay away - satan would love nothing more than for you to invite him in, while seemingly playing a 'harmless' game, so he can disguise himself as your dead loved one.

Parapsychology

Parapsychology is the scientific study of paranormal phenomena, including extrasensory perception (ESP), psychokinesis, and other psychic abilities that are not explained by current scientific understanding. Parapsychology investigates a range of phenomena that fall outside the realm of conventional psychology and science, and includes ESP, psychokinesis and reincarnation.

Palmistry

Palmistry, also known as chiromancy, is the art of studying the palm to reveal a person's character and predict possible future paths. It involves interpreting the lines and features of the hand, and it has roots in ancient practices from India and Roman fortune-telling. The origins of palmistry are uncertain, but it is regarded as a mystical art practiced worldwide, aiming to analyze personality traits and future events.

Voodoo

Voodoo, also known as Vodou or Vodun, is a complex spiritual and religious practice that originated in West Africa and developed further in Haiti. It combines elements of African traditions, Catholicism, and indigenous Taino beliefs, and is often misunderstood due to negative portrayals in popular culture. Voodoo involves rituals, ancestral connections, and a rich oral tradition, and it is characterized by its diverse practices and beliefs that vary among different communities.

Burning Sage to 'Cleanse'

Burning sage, also known as smudging, is a practice that has been used for centuries in various cultures and spiritual traditions. While some people burn sage to cleanse a space of negative energy, invite peace, or connect with the spiritual world, others use it as a form of protection. However, the Bible warns against practices that involve magic, sorcery, or rituals that seek power apart from God.

Burning sage is said to alter the spiritual environment around a person or place. While the scripture confirms that we exist in a physical world that interacts with an unseen spiritual world, it also prescribes how we are to defeat evil spirits: in Christ, not by burning a natural element.

Lastly, burning sage will actually open a demonic doorway and invite evil spiritual influence, not cleans the space in question - it serves to do the opposite of what the person doing the cleansing is attempting to do.

Divination

Divination is the practice of determining the hidden significance or cause of events, often involving the foretelling of the future through various techniques. The term originates from the Latin word divinare, meaning "to foresee" or "to predict". It encompasses a range of methods, including rituals and standardized processes, aimed at gaining insight into questions or situations.

Open doors to demonic influence include: Generational curses, word curses, holding unforgiveness toward others, judgements against people (revenge), involvement in occult practices (shown above), sexual sins, ungodly soul ties, pride, broken vows, and severe abuse and trauma.

As Christians, we have renounced Satan, all his works, and the empty promises of the kingdom of darkness. Satan takes God's creation and supernatural powers and perverts them. When we become baptized, we openly profess our faith in Jesus Christ and acknowledge what He did for us on the cross - fully and finally conquering the evil one and death. The kingdom of God is opposed to Satan's kingdom. Salvation in Jesus Christ presupposes our rejection of the kingdom of darkness. Our life, though, is a spiritual warfare. In the first letter of St. John (1 Jn. 5:18-20) he tells us two things. First of all, we who are born of God (by Baptism and the Holy Spirit) are protected by God so that the Evil One cannot touch us. But he also tells us that the whole world is under the Evil One.

The Evil One can tempt us, but he cannot touch us directly unless we open the door for him. We should not fear Satan nor should we be constantly looking for him in the ordinary happenings of our life.

Do not concentrate on the Evil Spirits, but fix your eyes and your faith upon Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are saved by Jesus Christ alone, through prayer, our adherence to the Word of God in the Bible, and through the sacraments, especially through the presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

In our prayer we should not forget to involve Mary, the Mother of God, who has crushed the head of the ancient serpent (Gen. 3:15). Devotion to Mary is a powerful means of protection in our daily life.

What is the kingdom of Satan, the kingdom of darkness like? It is a lie that seeks to resemble the Kingdom of God. Read Isaiah (14:12-15). It is about Satan. The prophet tells us that in his heart Satan is determined to be like God.

Therefore, in Satan's kingdom he wants everything that is in the Kingdom of God. But his kingdom is a lie; it is false. In the kingdom of darkness, there is false worship and adoration; there is evil prayer. He offers us false happiness and peace. He holds out to us dark wisdom and knowledge. This is how he tempted Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:5). Satan said: "No, God knows well that the moment you eat it (the forbidden fruit) your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad." In his kingdom, Satan also offers us a health that is unto death, and a protection that is false. Just as we picture the angels of heaven singing and worshipping God, there is also a special music that is evil in the kingdom of darkness.

Satan's kingdom is a lie. He wants to be like God. But in the very first of the Ten Commandments, God told Moses: "I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods that are proposed to us in the kingdom of darkness. " St. Paul tells us to be on our guard: "The Spirit says clearly that some men will abandon their faith in later times. They will obey lying spirits and follow the teaching of demons" (1 Tim. 4:1). Let us hold fast to our faith in the Lord Jesus and his Church. Our salvation is brought about by Jesus Christ alone, through prayer, by reading and studying the Word of God in the Bible, and through the presence of Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in our tabernacles.

When the Israelites were about to come into the promised land, the Lord God gave them many commandments that had to do with the true worship that He desired, and the false worship that He hated. These same commandments hold for us today.

"When you come into the land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the abominations of the people there. Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner, or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the Lord, and because of such abominations to the Lord, your God is driving these nations out of your way. You, however, must be altogether sincere toward the Lord, your God" (Deut. 18:9-13).

The Lord says that we must be sincere with Him. We cannot have it both ways. Jesus said: "He who is not with Me is against Me" (Matt. 21:30). We have to be firm in our resolution to follow the Lord alone.

Forbidden knowledge and power are those things, as shown above, which are obtained outside of God's influence or the normal way that human beings obtain knowledge. None of us knows the future; from our knowledge of particular circumstances we can know what might possibly happen. This is one thing. But to seek knowledge of the future or intimate knowledge about another person, apart from God, and through the help of clairvoyance or spirits is what is meant by forbidden knowledge.

Forbidden power is a kind of magical power that produces effects apart from God and attempts to control or influence others, according to our own will that is beyond ordinary human means.

Scriptures Concerning the Occult

Leviticus 20:6
"As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people."

Leviticus 19:31
"Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God."

Isaiah 47:13
“You are wearied with your many counsels;
Let now the astrologers,
Those who prophesy by the stars,
Those who predict by the new moons,
Stand up and save you from what will come upon you."
