Importance of Knowing Your Identity in Christ Jesus

Knowing and claiming your identity and power in Christ in spiritual warfare involves understanding and embracing your identity in Him, recognizing the transformative power of the gospel, and engaging in spiritual warfare with strength and guidance from the Holy Spirit. This is accomplished by recognizing that the world's systems do not define you anymore, understanding that your identity in God starts with understanding who He is and what He says about you (realizing your past truly does not define you - as a child of God, you have been made new!) and includes standing in the power and authority you have through Jesus Christ, and exercising that divine authority through His name, and aligning with God's will.

What are Spiritual (Demonic) Strongholds?

Strongholds are thought patterns erected by the devil in the minds of men by deceiving them into believing things that do not conform to what the scripture says. He uses their experiences, fears, past failures, family patterns, and environmental ideologies to create these things in their minds. One way or the other everybody have been a victim of strongholds until God by His mercy helped some people to break out of it. Scripturally, a stronghold is exactly what it sounds like: anything that has a strong hold on you or someone else. It is often also used as a military term, like an outpost in a foreign territory. When the enemy of our souls sets up camp against us, he often uses something that is very human-nature to twist into an addiction or other form of hold on us. But the good news is that when he does this, he doesn’t have a home court advantage. He has no rightful place in our midst and our Lord has already made clear at the end of all our stories, the victory belongs to Him alone!

These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful. – Revelation 17:14

However this does not still suggest that those who were once victims cannot become victims again because their minds are the tools the devil employs and so as far as their minds are still fully active the possibility of a stronghold being erected is still very high. Scripture admonishes us in Proverbs 4:23 that we should guard our hearts with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life. The devil really doesn’t need to destroy a man, all he needs to do is to lie to their minds and ensure that they keep brooding on those lies till it finally destroys them.

Jesus in the book of Matthew 13:25 spoke of how that the enemy comes to sow tares in the heart of men when they sleep and how those tares begin to grow into maturity. This parable was a clear explanation of how the devil comes to erect strongholds in the minds of men. He starts with just a mere thought, he plants it in the minds of the person and leaves him to do the thinking.

When that person begins to think on those things for long, it begins to create strong imaginative pictures in his mind and little by little the person begins to accept those thoughts as reality; at this point it has become a stronghold that he/she will now be struggling to break out from.

We really do not live in a world of wicked people, we only live in a world of people whose minds have been captured by the strongholds of the devil. People who have become addicts to all sort of habits- drinking, smoking, drugs, masturbation, premarital sex and all sorts are only victims of these strongholds and because their minds have not become fully surrendered to the power of God, they find it hard to break out from these things.

This is why Jesus had to say in the book of Matthew 15:13 that every plant which is Father did not plant in us have to be rooted out, because he knew that the devil will definitely plant things and if those things are not rooted out, they are capable of destroying us.

Strongholds makes you doubt the power of God and scripture tells us that we should not think of receiving anything from God if we ask Him in doubt, James 1:6-7. Strongholds keep you in a continuous cycle of sin and disobedience to God, such that even when you know that these things are wrong, you still find it hard to break out from. The fruit of the devil’s strongholds are recorded in Galatians 5, they include fornication, envy, drunkenness, hatred and others, and the bible records that all that those that engage in these things will not see the kingdom of God.

However, we have hope as believers because Christ has made provision for our deliverance through His word. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 4:12 that the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword that is able to pierce into our soul (minds) and our Spirit. In other words, the word of God can pierce into the deepest parts of our minds and destroy those thought patterns that have limited us for years and made us act in unpleasant ways no matter how long they have been. The Bible also tells us that we should stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and we should refuse to be entangled again with any yoke of bondage.

How Can I Be Set Free From Strongholds?
